Memory Bears & Memory Quilts: Which Keepsake Is Right for You?
Some of our most treasured possessions are the ones tied to a memory. At Krafty Bandit, we handcraft custom memory bears and memory quilts from the clothing of someone you love—turning cherished fabric into a keepsake you can hold onto for years to come.
Krafty Bandit is a family-run boutique in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, about 35 minutes south of Pittsburgh, and one of the few local makers who handcraft custom memory bears and memory quilts from a loved one's clothing. We serve the Mon Valley and Greater Pittsburgh area, including Westmoreland, Fayette, and Washington counties, and we accept mailed-in clothing from anywhere in the United States.
What is a memory bear?
A memory bear is a keepsake teddy bear sewn from a loved one's clothing—a favorite flannel shirt, a soft robe, a baby's onesie, or a military uniform. Each bear is cut and stitched by hand so that the patterns, buttons, and textures you remember become part of a huggable keepsake. Memory bears are a comforting way to honor a parent, grandparent, spouse, child, or even to preserve your own baby's first outfits. A memory bear needs only 1 to 2 garments and starts around $60, which makes it a meaningful choice even when you have just one special piece of clothing to work with.
What is a memory quilt?
A memory quilt (sometimes called a keepsake or clothing quilt) is a blanket pieced together from meaningful garments—t-shirts, dresses, jerseys, or baby clothes. Instead of tucking those clothes away in a drawer, a memory quilt lets you wrap yourself in them. They make deeply personal heirlooms for graduations, weddings, anniversaries, and remembrance. A lap-size memory quilt uses about a dozen shirts and starts around $125, with larger sizes using more garments and quoted individually.
How do I choose between a memory bear and a memory quilt?
Choose a memory bear when you have only one or two garments, when the keepsake is for a child or someone who will want to hold it, or when you are gifting several family members something from the same person's clothing. Choose a memory quilt when you have many garments to preserve, when you want something usable on a bed or couch every day, or when one large keepsake will be shared by the household. Many families do both: a quilt for the home and bears for the grandchildren.
| Memory bear | Memory quilt | |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing needed | 1 to 2 garments | About a dozen shirts (lap size) |
| Starting price | Around $60 | Around $125 (throw size) |
| Best for | Hugging, gifting, children, single special garments | Daily use, preserving many garments, the family home |
| Production time | 2 to 4 weeks | 2 to 4 weeks |
Can I get both, or a matching set?
Yes. Families often order a quilt from the bulk of the clothing and one or more bears from a few reserved garments, so several relatives each receive a keepsake from the same wardrobe. We also make a bear and blanket set for $75, which pairs a memory bear with a small matching blanket from the same clothing.

What clothing works best?
Almost any garment with meaning can be used. Cotton, flannel, denim, knit, and jersey all work beautifully. Pieces with recognizable details—a favorite plaid, an embroidered logo, a special button—make the finished keepsake even more personal. For a full walkthrough, read our guide to choosing and preparing clothing for a memory bear or quilt. Not sure if something will work? Just ask; we're happy to help you choose.
Caring for your keepsake
Memory bears and quilts are made to be treasured. Bears should be gently spot cleaned rather than machine washed; our memory bear care guide covers cleaning, display, and storage step by step. Quilts take a delicate cold wash; see how to care for a handmade quilt. We'll include care guidance with your finished piece.
