Choosing & Preparing Clothing for a Memory Bear or Memory Quilt
One of the most meaningful things we make at Krafty Bandit is a keepsake sewn from a loved one's clothing—a memory bear or memory quilt that lets you hold onto a favorite shirt, a baby's outfit, or a piece that simply carries memories. This guide walks through how to choose and prepare the clothing so your finished keepsake turns out exactly the way you're hoping.
Krafty Bandit is a family-run boutique in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, about 35 minutes south of Pittsburgh, and one of the few local makers who handcraft custom memory bears and memory quilts from a loved one's clothing. We serve the Mon Valley and Greater Pittsburgh area, including Westmoreland, Fayette, and Washington counties, and we accept mailed-in clothing from anywhere in the United States.
Which fabrics work best
Most everyday clothing works beautifully. Cotton, flannel, denim, jersey knit, fleece, and soft button-downs are all great choices and sew up into a sturdy, huggable keepsake. Very thin, stretchy, or delicate fabrics—like sheer blouses or fine silk—can still be used, but they sometimes need a backing for stability. Just let us know and we'll plan for it.
Choose pieces with meaning
The best memory keepsakes come from garments that truly remind you of someone—a go-to flannel, a work uniform, a team jersey, a soft robe, or those tiny first onesies. Pieces with recognizable details (a favorite plaid, an embroidered logo, a special button or pocket) make the finished bear or quilt even more personal, because those details can be worked right into the design.
How much clothing you'll need
It depends on the project. A single memory bear can often be made from just one or two garments, while a lap- or bed-sized memory quilt needs several pieces. Not sure if you have enough? Send us a quick list or a photo of what you have, and we'll let you know—and help you make the most of every piece.
How to prepare the clothing
- Wash and dry the items gently so they arrive clean and fresh. Please don't cut or alter them—leave that to us so we can position the best parts of each piece.
- Empty the pockets and remove pins, name tags, or anything you'd like to keep.
- Flag anything special. If there's a specific pocket, collar, button, monogram, or graphic you want featured, point it out and we'll build the design around it.
- Keep the pieces together and include a short note with your name, contact info, and what you're hoping for.
Add a personal touch
We can add custom embroidery—a name, a date, initials, or a short message—to most memory keepsakes. Embroidered details are a lovely way to mark a birthday, a memorial, or a special year, and they make the finished piece feel even more one-of-a-kind.

"We had custom varsity sweatshirts made with our babies' and their cousins' baby onesies and, boy, were they the hit of Christmas! Quality craftsmanship, great materials, and the communication was so helpful. If you have a keepsake item you'd like to commission, this is the place to do it!"
