What is IP plating on a stainless steel ring?

IP stands for ion plating. It bonds a thin layer of black finish to the steel under vacuum, which is harder wearing than paint or a dip. On this ring the black is limited to the recessed center channel, so the raised scroll and the edges stay bright steel.
