How to Care for Leather Goods (Genuine & Vegan)

A good bag can last for years with a little care. This guide covers the basics for both genuine and vegan leather, so whatever you carry stays looking its best. We carry handcrafted Jerry's Handmade Leather Works alongside Minori, MCHandbag, and Caroline Hill handbags.

First, know your leather

Genuine leather is a natural material that ages beautifully and likes a little conditioning. Vegan (faux) leather is a synthetic that does not need conditioner and prefers a simple wipe-down. The care is a little different, so it helps to know which you have. When in doubt, treat it gently and test any product on a hidden spot first.

Caring for genuine leather

Wipe regularly. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, and wipe spills quickly with a barely-damp cloth.
Condition now and then. A small amount of leather conditioner a few times a year keeps it soft and prevents cracking. Buff off the excess.
Avoid soaking and harsh cleaners. Skip baby wipes, alcohol, and all-purpose sprays, which can strip the finish.
Dry naturally. If it gets wet, blot and let it air dry away from direct heat, never a hair dryer or radiator.

Caring for vegan leather

Wipe with a damp cloth. A little mild soap and water on a soft cloth handles most marks. No conditioner needed.
Keep it out of heat and sun. Prolonged heat and direct sunlight can cause faux leather to crack or fade over time.
Be gentle on seams and corners, which see the most wear.

Storing your bags

Stuff to keep the shape. Fill with tissue or a small towel so the bag holds its form.
Let it breathe. Store in a dust bag or pillowcase, never sealed plastic, which can trap moisture.
Cool, dry, and out of the sun. Avoid attics, basements, and sunny windowsills.

Rain, spills, and everyday wear

Blot spills right away rather than rubbing. If a bag gets caught in the rain, wipe it down and let it air dry naturally. Rotating between a couple of bags also helps each one last longer, and keeping pens and makeup in a cosmetic bag or zip pouch protects the lining.
