How do I get the best burn from a fall candle?

How long should the first burn be?

Let the first burn run until the wax melts all the way across the top, about 3 to 4 hours, so the candle does not tunnel. Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before each light, burn no more than 3 to 4 hours at a time, and never leave a candle unattended.
