How to Use Wax Melts (and Get the Best Scent Throw)

Wax melts are an easy, flame-free way to fill a room with scent, and a little know-how makes them last longer and smell stronger. What are wax melts?

Wax melts are small, flameless cubes of scented wax that you warm in an electric or tea-light wax warmer. There is no wick and no flame, just gentle heat that releases the fragrance, which makes them a great choice for bedrooms, offices, and homes with little ones or pets.

How to use wax melts

Add one to two cubes to the dish of your warmer. Start with one and add more if you want a stronger scent.
Turn the warmer on and let the wax form a melt pool. The scent builds as it warms.
Enjoy, then turn it off when you leave the room or head to bed.

How to get the best scent throw

Match the warmer to the room. A small dish is perfect for a bathroom or office; larger or open spaces may need a second cube.
Refresh when the scent fades. Wax melts do not burn away, so the cube stays the same size even after the fragrance is spent. When you can no longer smell it, it is time to swap.
Keep cubes fresh. Store unused melts in a cool, dark spot, sealed, so they hold their scent until you are ready.

How to change your wax

Once the scent is gone, let the warmer cool so the wax hardens, then pop the cube out (many warmers let you flex the dish or the wax lifts right out). For stubborn bits, warm it for a minute to loosen, then wipe with a paper towel. Never pour wax down the drain.

Wax melt safety

Never add water to the wax or warmer.
Do not leave a warmer on unattended or while you sleep, and place it on a heat-safe surface.
Keep out of reach of children and pets, and let the dish cool fully before handling.
